Using Recycled Products
Over the past 30/40 years our society has become quite wasteful, with a throwaway type of attitude, meaning everything that gets put in the bin increases the mass of landfill waste. However, in recent years the level of recycling carried out in the UK has gradually increased, with around 40% of households now recycling our own waste. There are many streams of waste, ranging from the fortnightly collections of wheelie bins full of cardboard & plastic bottles to glass bottle banks to composting.
But how does recycling help? By collecting all these materials, it means there is less waste going to landfill and items are being reused as opposed to using up valuable new resources. Virgin plastic is generated from oil which is a finite resource and will not last forever, so by collecting plastic bottles this provides a stream of materials that would otherwise slowly decompose over many years in the ground. The other aspect of using recycled products means lower energy consumption as it is generally more efficient to reuse items than create them from new. This in turn reduces the usage of fossil fuels and emissions of carbon dioxide, helping combat climate change effects.
So by purchasing recycled products we can all aclose the loopa on the recycling of products, encouraging an eco lifestyle. The range and quality of recycled products has increased dramatically, below are some examples with full details:
Recycled Plastic Bird Feeders
- Recycled Glasses - these are made from used wine & beer bottles and are converted into tumblers & goblets with minimal energy usage. They are enhanced with various designs or are made from world wide renowned beers like Grolsch & Carlsberg, making a great talking point!
- Recycled Gifts - a range of clocks, thermometers, coasters & placemats manufactured from a slate like material which is created from vending machine coffee cups collected through the Save-a-Cup scheme operating in UK offices.
- Recycled Cardboard Play Houses- every wondered why your recycled cardboard goes? Here is a range of play houses for children created from recycled cardboard, creating a wide range of designs all of which can be decorated as well.
- Recycled Puppet Craft Kits- a cute range of puppet craft kits made from recycled card, suitable for children from 36 month's which they will enjoy creating and then playing with.
Recycling of products is worthwhile but in order to really reap the benefits we have to purchase recycled products in order to close the loop.

Summer art class for kids ideas…recycled art projects?
My daughter asked to enroll in a summer art program, and I agreed because it was very low cost (money is tight until after I start getting paid after returning from layoff for a month).
Here’s the catch: After she signed up, we found out that it was a class in “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” projects. They want the students to basically bring in a set number of art projects ideas for the first class, and then each student will bring in materials for those that are selected! I think it’s great and all…a nice idea for summer projects that can be given out as gifts by the kids later on in the year…but they each need ideas for at least five projects (preferably ten), a list of materials needed, and step-by-step instructions! EEK!
Some of the things they talked about being most interested in being used are plastic bottles, tin cans, pop cans, paper milk cartons, plastic milk jugs, old magazines, old boxes (especially shoe boxes), and wooden picture frames (minus the glass).
I came up with some old school projects we did when I was a child…
1. A bird feeder made with old two liter bottles
2. A pen/pencil holder made from a soup can
3. An Easter bunny basket made with an old paper milk carton and cotton balls
4. A weaving loom made from an old picture frame
I don’t think #4 is a good idea because it involves hammers and nails, and even though my daughter is capable, some of the children might not be. So, I’d like to come up with at least two more ideas…for kids ranging in age from 7-9…so nothing too difficult, and something that can be done in two hours (the length of the class).
I was thinking about old cat food cans (the short ones, not the ones the size of soup cans). We did a project in 4-H once using them, but for the life of me I can’t remember what we did with them…
Anyway, does anyone have any ideas? Her class will start in two weeks, and I want to try them out with her to make sure they’re not going to be too confusing before we make up the list.
Thanks in advance!
Are certain birds attracted to different feeders?
I have to make a bird feeder for school out of recycled materials, such as plastic bottles etc. I was wondering if anyone had any idea what kinds of birds are attracted to what kinds of feeders. I found a few good sites but I would like some other opinions. Also if you could include any good sites you know about that would be awesome. Thanks!
Definitely. For example, if you want to exclude English sparrows, you want a feeder that requires the birds to hang upside-down to feed. The food used also has a big effect as does the place you hang the feeder.
Can you think of any eco-friendly contraptions or gadgets? Anything to help us be green?
I need you to think of “green” stuff. It can be anything from groovy recycling bins with an edge, or bird feeders which use your old plastic bottles to store seeds. I want quirky ideas, which have an aim to be environmentally friendly. All suggestions welcome!
I don’t think you guys really understood the question, sorry i probably wasnt very clear! At school we are setting up a pretend business and we need a business idea. The theme is eco-friendly so we want a quirky, innovative product to sell.
The off switch
scissors to cut up your credit card
No stuff can be environmentally friendly, at best it may be friendlier or less damaging.
Being eco-friendly starts with the mind/spirit and ideas, then the right solutions can be found eg a book such as Coming back to life by Joanna Macy
What do you do with your old plastic gallon milk jugs?
Any arts and crafts? Recycle? Trash it? I remember my dad would cut out the top with the handle and plant tomatoe seeds inside or green scallions(onions).
I myself made a bird tree feeder. I cut out 2 sides and put wildbird seed in it. It did attract a few birds and squirrels!
I love these plastic containers. I usually have the 4 litres bottles as we have lots of cereals in our house.
I normally cut the front off from neck to half way down but leave the handle at the back. I put turps or some other brush cleaner in it and stand my paint brushes in. When the decorating is done, wash the brush and sling the bottle. You can store nails in it, pegs, cottons and many other uses. The bird feeder is a great one. I’ll certainly try that.
