Get The Right Bird Feeder
By Jon Kilminster
Bird watching is an amateur sport of many. We trudge out in the snow to see the chickadees, call the neighbours when there's a bluebird in the yard and sprinkle seed out for the magpies even though they're loud and scare our pets. At some point in everyone's life it's very likely that one or two bird feeders will be purchased so that we can pursue our odd obsession. But it's tough to know just which bird feeders to buy. Hanging, tree-attached, free-standing? There is a lot of choice out there.
It's a good idea to decide which sort of birds you want to attract to your yard, and think about which ones are already habitual visitors. All birds have different tastes and styles, and will respond to bird feeders and seeds in different ways. While your chickadees might enjoy smaller seeds and a bird feeder surrounded by bushes, cardinals will be happier with safflower and aren't picky about tree cover. They're just as picky as us, so it's best to know a little about the birds you want to meet before choosing seed and bird feeders!
Best Bird Feeders Cardinals
The best way to discover about the birds in your garden is not to surf the net, but get down to your local library or bookshop and buy a book. Get one with color photographs if you can. You'll also learn about their nesting and rearing habits, which can become a hobby in itself.
While most small birds are partial to sunflower seeds, you are likely to find that an abundance of them in your yard (scattered across the ground by messy birds) will attract other sorts of wildlife as well. Squirrels, raccoons and the odd rabbit might come ambling by to sample the free food, and you'll be well on your way to owning a full-fledged menagerie. But what's wrong with that? You always did like a little bird-watching, and now you've got the whole zoo to yourself.

What is the best type of bird feeder for Blue Jays & Cardinals?
My father loves feeding birds and has several bird feeders. We seem to attract enough of all types of birds, but the larger birds (Blue Jays & Cardinals) have a tough time feeding as compared to finches and other smaller ones. We provide a wide-variety mix of bird feed and black oil sunflowers.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Blue jays are seldom attracted to seed, as their primary diet is bugs, but you might try a suet feeder to attract them. They can’t use the tail-paddle type feeder that a woodpecker can use; you’ll need to put the blocks next to something they can perch on. Cardinals, on the other hand, LOVE sunflower seed, and will come to just about any kind of feeder that has them. I prefer the hopper-type feeders simply because you can put lots of seed in them. Many blue jays like peanuts – it seems to depend on their mood; I managed to accustom one to me to the point that he would take them from my hand, although he’d never *quite* sit on my finger. Be sure not to feed peanuts during breeding season, however; adults can handle them with no problem, but they have a bad way of stuffing the babies’ crops full with these, and the young blue jays have a VERY tough time digesting them.
Be sure to put water out for all the birds; while they won’t all eat seed or suet, they all need water, and you might well be the only place in the neighborhood that has water avilable to them. If you can find a drip nozzle or sprayer, that will help attract them, as they will come to the sound of the running water. I even got the occasional hawk at my birdbath when I lived in Colorado!
Whatever kind of feeder you choose to use, be sure to keep it clean. Here in western Washington state, we’re having a bit of a problem with birds dying of salmonella, so we are being encouraged to use the tube-type feeders for finches and similar small birds. Your feeders should be cleaned once a week with a solution of bleach and water so that there’s less chance of disease transmission from sick birds to healthy ones.
Enjoy
A mixed seed will attract more kinds of birds. They all have their favorite types of food and a blend will appeal to more of them Add suet to your feeding program as well.
What kind of seed are you using? We use black oil sunflower seeds and don’t really have a problem. Seed mixes with millet might attract starlings and house sparrows more.
I know there are all sorts of fancy feeders out there to deter unwanted guests. One of them is designed so that when a big enough bird sits on the perch, the food slot is closed off.
You could also try a long narrow feeder like many people have for finches, I doubt starlings would go for that.
What is the best way to deter starlings from eating our bird feed because they scare other birds away?
They scare birds away like cardinals, red winged black birds and other smaller birds. What is the best approach to the situation? Would you suggest a different bird feeder or bird feed or even something else? Please help.
What kinds of seeds attract the largest variety of birds (I live in Michigan)?
Right now, we use black oil sunflower seed and those attract mainly cardinals and most of the common smaller birds like chickadees, titmouses, etc… and we use thistle for the goldfinches. My Mom said all other seeds are a waste of money and are mostly just filler seeds. I heard many birds like safflower seeds. How can I attract those bird that have the parrot like beak (I can’t remember their name!) and are on the larger side? We used to get them. What kind of feeders are best? Do you recommend a certain brand or a place to buy them? And if I were to buy mixed seed, what brand would attract the most birds? Do you think I should build one of those long wooden things with legs that has an area to hold seeds (they look like the things horses eat out of, if you know what I’m talking about)? And we tend to put our feeders right by the windows to discourage squirrels and get a closer look, should I put some further back as some varities might be more timid? THANKS!
What type of seed to feed wild birds?
In my front yard I have a tube feeder and a suet feeder. The types of birds that i usually see around the feeders are Cardinals, Carolina Chickadee, Downy Woodpecker. I also have seen small brown birds but im not really sure what they are. The cardinals mainly picks up scraps off the ground. I have a male and female that come around. The Chickadee mainly eats out of the tube feeder but I seen it eating out of the suet feeder and sometimes eating the seed on the ground. The male and female woodpecker mainly eat out of the suet feeder but i’ve seen them on the tube feeder too. I don’t have squirrels. Raccoons and possum have been seen around my house too. So, anything that wont attract them would be nice. And I would like to know of the best kind of suet that would be good for all of the birds and the best type of seed. Right now I have a high energy blend of suet that is in the suet feeder and the type of seed i have just says wild bird seed but the ingredients are Milo,
White Prosso Millet and Sunflower seed. I would also like to know if a bird bath would be good I seed some the you can hang from a tree. Would these type of birds use something like that.
It sounds like you have a really great start! Good for you for caring for your feathered neighbors. I would look up on the internet each bird that you see out there, or whichever you want to attract, and go from there.
Water is a very important elment to your feeding plan. Yes, the hanging one would be good, or a standing one. I like the standing one we have because it circulates the water supply and stays cleaner. That’s really important. If you get the hanging one, make sure it stays clean and fresh. I used a hanging plate originally intended as a feeder.
Make sure your water isn’t too deep, birds like to bathe as well as drink.
Best Way to Ween Birds off Feeder?
I have been feeding birds (mostly sparrows, finches, and cardinals, and doves) from my balcony for the past few years. I mainly do this during the winter months to ensure they have a steady supply, but lately I’ve also put out food and water during the summer as we’re under a terrible drought here in Central Texas. The problem is that I will be moving to a new apartment at the end of November and I want to figure out the best way to ween the birds off my food and successfully find another ample source. I can think of three options.
1. Stop feeding them altogether now and let them find something while it is warm.
2. Slowly reduce the amount of food on a daily basis until I leave.
3. Continue feeding them until I move.
I’m not crazy about the third option as it would leave them high and dry during the beginning of the winter months. Any opinions as to the other options or something I haven’t considered. Thanks!
